Communication with family members is very important during and after a severe weather incident. If the power is knocked out there is no way to call using landline but there are now apps to help you keep in touch. Social media is one of the most popular ways to communicate with friends and family. It is also a place where news and warnings can spread rapidly. Social media will soon be the way that news about weather will be spread. Radio and television will soon be second to social weather updates. Recently I have been receiving weather warnings straight through my phone. I believe this is much more efficient than playing that annoying tone on the radio. In the near future weather will be very much social, and the weather stations will send updates to your feed. There are also weather Apps created by the red cross and some cities. These apps will help keep track of your family members locations and give you an easy way to communicate with them. Eventually these apps will be integrated into social media giants like Google+ and Twitter as just another helpful feature they have. The problem with weather on Social Media is the fact that rumors of fake earthquakes and severe storms will spread all over and cause unnecessary terror and preparation for something that doesn’t exist. But never the less social media and weather will make a great mix. The Accuweather app is a good example of a successful social weather app.
Vine has so much more potential to expand now that it is on Android. Now there will be much more creative people using the service. It also has the capability to attract businesses to advertise on it. Think about how cool it would be just to see a new product in a short six second video instead of watching a thirty second commercial before a Youtube video. There are so many options to expand using Vine. Would you rather spend ten minutes watching a hole in golf or six seconds watching each stroke? Speed is the key now and that is why sports like golf and tennis are not popular to watch on tv. Most people are too impatient to watch the two minutes between the action. There are countless ideas you can use a six second video to make information faster to get. There are a few problems with vine though.
Today Google bought Waze, a navigation program, for $1.3 billion. The question is why did they do it? Well I have two reasons why they would pay so much for a foreign company.
1. To keep Facebook from getting their hands on it.
2. To incorporate the real time traffic technology that It uses.
I feel that the main reason was reason number one. I feel this way because if google could get their mapping and navigation systems to be the best in the world, thats just another area they will dominate. But I can also see reason number two having to do with the decision to. Google might just be trying to keep Facebook from getting something that Google doesn’t have. But it happened and now google plans to keep Waze in Isreal for the next three years. After that they will more than likely get rid of the company and use the technology in google maps to give better traffic updates.
A lot of people wonder what is the best time to post things on social media. The answer to that question is yet another question: what are you posting? If you are just posting to share something with friends or something you thought was cool it really doesn’t matter what time you post it. Just post it before you forget. But if it is content that you need to get traffic on, that is a different story. The busiest time of day is during the work hours. Admit it, you feel the urge to check your feed every so often while you are supposed to be working. You should get the most traffic between the hours of 11 and 5. So in other words avoid posting things in the early mornings and late evenings if you want more people to see it.
When vine came out on android it was a huge hit. The idea of sharing a short video instead of a picture appealed to a lot of people. Google took made its own version, but instead of a video it is an animation. Many of you may know about Auto Awesome and how cool some of them are but in reality, vine is just easier and faster. With Auto Awesome you just take a series of pictures with small changes in them and it stitches them into a short, or long, animation. Auto Awesome also can create panoramic pictures. This is similar to vine but defiantly not an imitation. Vine is more of a video sharing service than a clever photography trick. But now that it is on android. I can see many, much more clever, users starting to use it in better ways. My uncle and I believe that vine has much more potential and will grow to be much bigger than it is now. So Google did make a short animation feature but I don’t believe it was an attempt to beat out vine. They are just doing what Google does, which is make cool, fun things to help people out.
There are a few reasons why the social app Vine did so much better than Cinemagram. Some of the reasons are obvious while others are not. One of the major reasons why it was not as good is the fact that it was not visually pleasing. Orange is not a social media color. When I see red it is usually on warning signs and I typically avoid those. Another thing against it is the lack of audio in the videos. I have been reading through some of the recent comments for the app and it looks like they cut the video max length to six seconds in an attempt to imitate Vine. Another thing Vine has going for it is the fact that it is linked to a successful social media site and not some company trying to get recognized in all of the social media chaos. I have also heard that the video quality is not as good as vine but I have been having some quality issues with vine myself. whenever the light changes it takes too long for the camera to adjust. In summary I believe that vine is the better app and that Cinemagram will never be one of the greats. If I had to choose an app that would dominate the short clip area it would have to be vine or a Google version of it. If Google were to do a “Youtube lite” ,where videos were short, it would very popular.
This day in age everybody is looking to get information as fast as they can. If you can’t offer fast easy access to communicate you will not be successful. Evidence to support this is the fact that social apps like Instagram, Vine, and Snapchat are very popular. They all offer a way to share information visually which is the fastest way to intemperate something. Vine takes it a step forward and adds sound to the visual. Facebook, on the other hand, has a mobile set up that is very complected. On top of that they change the interface all the time like it is no big deal. While Instagram, Vine, and Snapchat offer a fast and easy way to share visuals. But what is sad is that Instagram has had updates that have started to add complexities that do not make the app any better. An example of this is a random shape that appears on the screen when you have notifications. Because of this I feel that Instagram will have the same fate as Facebook and Myspace. At the same time Vine will have countless opportunities for businesses to benefit from the service. So in the next year Instagram will be in Facebook’s position and Facebook will be in Myspace’s position.
